Quickly Unpacking After a Move

At Atkins Removals we understand it is easy to dream about settling into your new home, the reality is moving is a big job. That’s why we believe unpacking is equally as important as packing and have come up with an easy step-by-step guide to help you:

      - Stay Organised
     - Follow a Plan
     - Find Help

STAY ORGANISED

Tip #1 Pack to Unpack

One of the best ideas is to pack your items so that you can easily unpack them. This includes labelling packing boxes and may include colour-coding items/rooms and creating a move-in plan.

Tip #2 Map-out where furniture should go

If you can take photos and measurements of your new house ahead of time it will be easier to plan the position  of your furniture. Be sure to provide a copy of your map to your furniture removal company before they start unloading to ensure everything ends up in the right place.

Tip #3 Make unpacking your priority

Unpacking needs to be taken seriously if you want to settle into your new home quickly. It may take a day or two to feel comfortable, but the longer it takes you to tackle each job, the longer it will take for you to feel at home.

FOLLOW A PLAN

Step #1 Check your inventory list

When your furniture removal company arranged the move for you, they would have created an inventory and should’ve provided you with a copy. Use this list to go room by room and make sure that all your furniture and cartons have arrived – if it appears that anything is missing contact your removal company right away.

Step #2 Locate your “Essentials” boxes

When all your furniture and cartons are unloaded your priority will be to locate the “Essential” boxes you packed (see blog “Handy Hints for a Stress-free Moving Day”). These are the packing cartons you will need first to make settling in all that much easier.

Step #3 Sort your belongings

Now is the time to sort through the rest of your belongings. If you are using a room for storage (see blog “Handy Hints for Moving Day”) make sure your moving boxes are grouped into rooms for easy access. It’s also a good idea to label the sides of the boxes for easy identification in case they are stacked.

Step #4 Start with the largest items

Your largest pieces of furniture will be the easiest to place and the easiest to start with, especially if you have a map (see Tip #2 Stay Organised – above).

If you are feeling a little overwhelmed – don’t despair!

  • Start with the bedrooms – Getting your bedrooms set up is important as you will most certainly be exhausted by the end of the day.

  • Tackle the kitchen – This is another room you will want to get set up as soon as possible. Check all the major appliances are hooked up and working, then start unpacking.

  • Next is the bathroom – At the end of a long moving day the opportunity to get cleaned up will be most welcome and your “Essential Bathroom Box” will have everything you need and make setting up the bathroom a breeze.

  • Time for the Living Room – You’ll most likely have most of the big pieces of furniture in place already and just need to set up all your electronics and personal items.

  • Additional rooms – The guest bedroom, spare room and study can usually wait - and that goes for the garage as well.

FIND HELP

If the job of unpacking seems like too much, you can always hire an expert. Your professional removal company can usually provide this service, so make sure you ask them what they offer – from one room to unpacking everything. They can also dismantle and assemble beds if you ask them to. The added bonus is they will take away the empty packing cartons and removal packing materials when they have finished.

Phone a friend – Friends and family are usually more than willing to help – turn on some music, order some food and have some fun!

Moving is a BIG job and asking for help, or hiring help, can be a real lifesaver.

Everything is unpacked – now what????

After everything is unpacked and in place be sure to double check your empty moving boxes and recycle or give away removal packing materials.

Remember that moving is a process but you are sure to have a successful move, with a quick unpack and plenty of time to settle into your new home if you;

   - Organise    - Use a plan    - Ask for help
