How to Pack Moving Boxes

Aside from the actual move, packing is arguably one of the most tiresome steps when relocating. Fortunately, knowing what to pack, how to pack them and where they should be stored can significantly ease the stress. The more organised and efficient you are when packing, the faster you can finish the job. Consider creating a checklist of all the items you will be bringing with you on your move to ensure that nothing gets left behind, then follow these easy steps:

Invest in Good Quality Durable Boxes

Boxes made specifically for removals should always be your first choice. These boxes are designed to be of a standard size and quality, providing the security your items need. Boxes from other sources such as a workplace or other business may seem to be in good condition, but they are generally less sturdier. Professional removalist boxes are specifically designed for moving, are more durable and can be less expensive than purchasing from other outlets.

A question you may ask when buying packing supplies in Australia is just how many you need. It can be difficult to answer this definitively but the number will depend on the size of your home, the amount of contents and the number of people living in your house.

Reinforce the Base

One part homeowners often forget when packing for a move is to ensure that the base of their boxes are sufficiently taped to ensure they are sturdy and secure. It would be a waste of time to carefully pack each item into boxes only to have the bottom all out when you pick them up. Properly reinforce the base of your box by using plenty of packing tape all around. Add tape along the edges that need to be sealed as well as on the corner edges of the box. You can also place a few strips of tape along the entire base of the box at a parallel angle.

Pad the Interior

Have you considered the journey your goods will be undertaking? There are many ways your goods may be transported, by road, rail or ship. With all this movement there is a possibility that your valuables may shift in transit which can result in breakages. Creating a cushioned interior for every box reduces the chances of your belongings being damaged during transit.

Add layers of bubble wrap, packing paper or linen on the bottom of each box to create a cushion that will not only protect its interior but also prevent items from falling out if the box breaks.

Fill the Boxes

After you’ve prepared the boxes, consider the weight of each individual box. A box of soft toys will way much less than a box of books. Consider packing each box so that the total weight is light enough for one person to pick up, usually no more than 20kgs. Always put the heavier items in the bottom of the box with the lighter items on top, this will help reduce any damage to items in the box.

When filling boxes, it’s important to not overfill. Overfull boxes are dangerous to carry and they can place too much strain on whoever is carrying them. These boxes are also more prone to breakage, regardless of how much protection is inside.

Secure the Boxes

Once you’ve finished packing a box, use bubble wrap, packing paper, linen or cushions to fill any empty spaces inside. This greatly limits the movements of your valuables during transit, helping prevent breakage. When done, thoroughly secure the box with packing tape. If you find it hard to close a box or if you have to force it close in any way, it’s best to remove some of the items. You should be able to close your boxes easily, with no pressure placed on the tape securing them.

Label and Stack the boxes

As you are packing your boxes, it’s a good idea to label or keep a list of the items and the room it belongs to on each box. This will make it much more efficient for you when unpacking as the removalist on delivery will be able to put each box in the appropriate room.

Also, when stacking your boxes as you’re packing, keep the heavy boxes on the bottom with the lighter ones on top for stability and prevent the boxes falling over if they are bumped. This will help to prevent any damage to the boxes and your valuables.
