History of Tasmania's Atkins Removals & Storage

The Atkins Removals & Storage Story

John Atkins has long been associated with the transport industry, purchasing his first truck in 1965 to operate a general freight business between Launceston and Evandale.

The transport industry, however, was already in John's blood. Following his army service, John's father, Jack Atkins, started a trucking business in 1946, carting a variety of goods, including hay bales, wool bales, superphosphate, air freight, and white electrical goods.

Due to requests for weekend furniture removals, John turned his attention to removing furniture in northern Tasmania, and thus from this small beginning, Atkins Removals & Storage was born. The company, operated from the family home in Invermay, Launceston, flourished. John and his wife Linda, who is now involved in the business, made his first interstate removal in 1978.

Our Expansion

Atkins Removals & Storage continued to grow, prompting a move to Cormiston Road, Riverside, which included storage sheds and a loading dock. Interstate removals were also on the rise, so we acquired storage depots in Melbourne and Sydney. The backbone of a company engaged in transport and removals services is always its fleet. So, we purchased several vehicles, including prime movers and trailers, to handle the increased volume of work.

In April 2006, the company relocated to Lilydale Road, Tasmania, after purchasing Jack Atkins Transport from John's sister, Lynette. The storage and office complex are of a high standard and ensure our customer's top-quality service and handling of their furniture and effects.
