Our history

John Atkins has had a long association with the transport industry purchasing his first truck in 1965 to operate a general freight business between Launceston and Evandale.

The transport industry was already in John’s blood as his father Jack Atkins commenced a trucking business in 1946 following army service carting a multitude of goods including hay bales, superphosphate, wool bales, air freight and electrical white goods.

Because of requests for weekend furniture removals John turned his attention to removing furniture in Northern Tasmania and thus from this small beginning Atkins Removals & Storage was born.

The business operating from the family home in Invermay Launceston flourished and John along with his wife Linda who was now involved in the business made his first interstate removal in 1978.

The company continued to grow prompting a move to Cormiston Road Riverside which included storage sheds and a loading dock.

Interstate removals were on the increase and storage depots in Melbourne and Sydney were acquired.

Purchases of vehicles to handle the increased volume of furniture were made with prime movers and trailers being the back bone of the fleet.

In April 2006 the company relocated to Lilydale Road Rocherlea after purchasing Jack Atkins Transport from John’s sister Lynette. The storage and office complex is of a high standard and ensures our customers of quality service and handling of their furniture and effects.
